Kenya R. Barnes, LMFT

Kenya Brown, MFT

Kenya is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She graduated from Valdosta State University in 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and in 2011 with a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Prior to making the decision to further her education, Kenya worked in law enforcement for fifteen years with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department. She had the opportunity to see and understand issues that tends to disrupt the community. She chose the field of study, Marriage and Family Therapy, because of her desire to help those who find themselves searching for pathways to deal with their problems. With the understanding that it is difficult for those that have been rejected by society to progress because they are unaware of their abilities within; this can put limitations on the opportunity for them to create change within themselves.

Along with an extensive career in law enforcement, Kenya has worked in the community providing home based therapeutic and advocacy services; biopsychosocial assessments and treatment planning for Pathway to Hope Counseling as well as Peaceway Counseling and Mediation. The clientele consisted of individuals and families with mental illness such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, parenting, childhood behavioral issues and family-relationship issues.

Kenya furthered her experience as a Mental Health Specialist for the Florida Department of Corrections later outsourced to Corizon Health serving a population with antisocial personality disorder, borderline intellectual functioning and adjustment issues. Kenya also has experience working at Behavioral Health Services of South Georgia as a licensed therapist conducting assessments and therapy to patients with serious psychiatric illnesses to include schizophrenia, bipolar and major depressive disorder.

Kenya entered private practice November 2014, in Valdosta, Georgia; assisting couples, individuals and families with relationship issues, sexual orientation and transgender adjustment as well as the anxiety and depression involving the issues.

Girl in a jacket

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Georgia in 2012 and a Master of Social Work from Valdosta State University in 2014. I have had the pleasure of
working with adolescents, adults, couples and families in a variety of practice settings for over 9 years.

My experience includes working with individuals with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders in both community and inpatient settings. I also have experience working with juveniles and their families through intensive, evidence based practice. After working with juveniles facing prison time in New York, I relocated to Valdosta, where I provided mental health counseling to adult males in a prison setting. My most recent experience has been working with individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, stress, trauma, grief/loss, family/relationship concerns, LGBTQI+ concerns, self-esteem concerns, substance use, and work/life balance concerns. I also enjoy working with clients who are experiencing concerns related to identity, race and ethnicity.

It is my belief that every individual has the strength within to work toward goals that can help them achieve a happy and fulfilling life. Through collaborative effort and solutions-focused therapy, I am committed to helping you uncover your true potential and live the full life you deserve. I hope to meet each client where they are and offer a supportive environment, free of judgement and criticism. There is no problem too big
or too small for us to work on. Your wellbeing will always be my priority. I look forward to working with you on your new journey.

Schilling Thomas Therapy Services, LLC
Rebecca Schilling Thomas, LPC, Certified EMDR Therapist

Taylor C.D. Dasher, MFT Intern My ideal client is someone who entrusts me with their time, personal life experiences, and allowing me to be a part of their journey. Life in general maneuvers in unpredictable directions-up, down, even diagonally! And sometimes it is hard to process those directions and adapt to them. Despite the incidents that occur in life, what can we do to adapt to it while living a comfortable life that is fit for us? What can we do to not live life based on the "problem." Let's work together to find that starting point, decipher the presenting problem and make it to the end goal! The way we perceive things influences how we approach various life scenarios. Having the mindset and perception you are comfortable with can cause you to not be able to navigate through that comfortable life efficiently. What if you challenge yourself to view factors surrounding you through multiple lenses and make discoveries? Let's reframe our approaches! I provide a safe space of many qualities- warmth, comfort, understanding, and making sure you are not alone during this journey. This is a collaboration and you are the expert on your reasoning for seeking therapy. I would like to be that person to guide you to excel in your expertise. Currently, I am seeing self pay clients and clients through Open Path Collective. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me at 229-531-6595. If I don't answer, I may be in session, leave me a voicemail or send me a text message and I will return your call as soon as possible.

I am passionate about helping motivated adults learn how to discover their self-worth, cultivate healthy relationships, and develop compassionate self-talk. Much of my practice focuses on PTSD, self-criticism, negative self-image, and unhealthy relationships. My primary approaches to therapy are trauma-focused and insight-oriented. I enjoy helping clients build insight into how significant painful experiences have impacted the beliefs they have formed about themselves, others, and the world. I have also found that utilizing Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) has been a life-changer for those who have felt “stuck” in therapy and have struggled to reap benefits from more cognitive approaches.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified EMDR Therapist in the state of Georgia. I graduated with a Master of Science in Psychology from Valdosta State University and have worked in a variety of settings, including in-patient, college counseling, community mental health, and suicide-specific crisis services.
